Self-Regulation: A Journey Towards Autism Acceptance

Six years ago, my life took a turn I never anticipated. My son was diagnosed with autism, and like any parent, I plunged into a world of research, desperate to find ways to support and help him navigate through his unique world. The initial advice I encountered was overwhelmingly about “fixing” – altering his diet, introducing a myriad of supplements, enforcing strict routines, and adopting various behavioral adjustment strategies. Despite my best efforts, none seemed to work, and the constant pressure to “correct” him only exacerbated our stress, affecting not only his development but also the harmony of our home environment.

It wasn’t until a pivotal moment of realization, prompted by an insightful outsider, that I began to see the detrimental impact of my approach. I decided to take a step back, to stop trying to “fix” my son, and instead, provide him with the space he needed to grow and develop on his own terms. This shift marked the beginning of a beautiful transformation, not just for my son, but for our entire family.

I discovered the power of self-regulation and the profound effect it can have on creating a calm and nurturing environment. By focusing on my own body work, I learned to manage my stress and emotions, fostering a peaceful atmosphere that encouraged my son’s natural development. This approach, grounded in the understanding that the body can heal and grow in a regulated, parasympathetic state, was in stark contrast to the forced compliance and behavioral modification methods I initially encountered.

These common and more well known therapies, though often yielding quick results, carry the risk of hindering long-term development and creating secondary issues. By maintaining a calm and regulated environment, free from emotional stress and frustration, we not only supported our son’s development but also cultivated a space of acceptance and understanding.

Almost immediately, we witnessed remarkable progress. My son’s development accelerated, flourishing in an environment of acceptance and love. This journey taught us the invaluable lesson that embracing our own well-being and regulating our emotions can create a ripple effect, enhancing the growth and development of those around us.

This blog is a testament to our journey and a message to other families navigating similar paths. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful support we can offer is not through attempting to change our loved ones but by transforming ourselves. By fostering a calm, regulated environment, we can encourage natural growth and acceptance, celebrating our loved ones for who they are, in all their perfection.

As we observe Autism Acceptance Month, let’s remember the importance of self-regulation, not just for those with autism but for everyone. It’s about creating a space where everyone can thrive, developing at their own pace, in their own unique way. By taking control of our own emotional and physiological states, we can cultivate an environment that promotes healing, growth, and unconditional acceptance.
